Most Frequently Asked Questions

How does “Tommy the Matchmaker” do it?

Just think the “Donahue Show”, but add music, dancing, and a touch of talk. Tommy bounces around with his microphone and all of a sudden you’re introduced to someone while everyone else is busy mixing-dancing-mingling. Most feel it’s different from any other bar, night-club, or social situation that they’ve ever experienced and the media seems to agree. Tommy says very simply, “People meet people. That’s all there is to it”. He ought to know since years ago as a D.J. in the Washington D.C. area market he created the national term “meetin’ and greetin’ ” .

What kind of music do you play?
Every song is a hit. Every song is danceable. Again the Yacht Club is unique in that no radio station plays our music formula. We play hits from the 50’s to 2005. You might hear a song from Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or Michael Jackson mixed with cuts from Shaggy, Nelly and Celine Dion.

What are the best nights?
What you’re really saying is “what night is best to meet someone?”. “Tommy the Matchmaker” feels that first timers might enjoy the less mobbed atmosphere on Thursday (Latin Nite/International Nite). Both weekday nights draw 100 – 150 guests, while weekends number from 250 to 300 guests. Remember the Yacht is not like any other bar, so if you’ve been sitting home too long and/or are recently divorced or widowed it will take a little getting use to, especially for those who say “I don’t do bars”.

“I don’t do bars – why is the Yacht different?”
First, most bars/club/discos cater to the under 30 crowd. The “money demographic” (30 – 55) has few choices, so at the outset you’re among your own at the Yacht.

Second, “Tommy the Matchmaker” tries to make sure, unobtrusively, that you just don’t sit there all night. He treats the place like his own cocktail party every night. Plus he seems to have an uncanny sense of who might work well together.

Tommy’s philosophy is that the world is a singles bar. You can meet at the minister’s coffee after church, a bus stop, a baseball game, a dog show, a political rally or, of course, at the Yacht Club! You simply have to look up and make eye contact, then who knows what follows!

What do women wear?
The first thing we always tell a lady is dress in something you can dance in. Whether you are here on a Thursday or a Saturday, you should always be ready to p-a-r-t-y!  Thursday’s are semi-casual so you can wear jeans but with a cute top to dress them up. The rest of the week ladies come in everything from after-work attire like business suits, to cocktail dresses. All you have to remember is that you should dress as if you’re going to meet someone and you want to make a good impression. But the most important thing is to get here and get ready to have fun.
